The final chapter of Jenina’s birthday getaway has approached. It’s Sunday, March 13th, 2016 at 10:15am and we’ve got to check out by 11am. Pack, pack, pack, and even Nikyla doesn’t want to leave. We’ve had an excellent time at the Woods on Pender.

Our ferry reservation is not until 7pm, so we’ve decided to explore the North side of the island.

First stop, breakfast / brunch! According to Trip Advisor, the Café at Hope Bay, is a must stop for any foodie. They were right! We had some of the best egg bennys. A maple sausage with Fennel egg Benny and a Crispy Salmon egg Benny. If you’re on Pender Island, the Cafè at Hope Bay is a must stop for sure!

You might have to roll us out of the Café, but we have more to see on this beautiful island.

We drove around aimlessly following roads to the North. We came across a few areas of abandoned buildings near Port Washington. Our end spot brought us to Lac Roe (Roe Lake); where we drove up a dirt road for a couple of kms.

A trail head stated .5kms to Lac Roe, so we put Nikyla’s jacket on, grabbed an umbrella for the light rain and began our hike.

The views were incredible and worth the wet soggy hike up. At least the rain came to a stop for the hike back down.

There’s still time to kill before our ferry heads out. So we’ve decided that more coffee couldn’t hurt. At first we looked up Moonbean Coffee Roasters, but Google didn’t turn up any results for a coffee shop. Along the route, we saw signs for the Slow Coast Café near Medicine Beach. It didn’t take much convincing to turn off and follow the signs.

While searching Google for the Slow Coast Café, we parked along the side of the road and saw an arrangement of old bicycles. They looked pretty neat lined up against the fence.

Once inside the Slow Coast, there was a small group of senior residents playing guitars and harmonicas. It felt like a place where locals could go and socialize. We sat and updated our blog. Jenina tried to start focusing and read her novel “Finders Keepers” by Stephen King, the second installment following the “Mercedes Killer.”

Started off with a drip coffee and an almond milk cappuccino. It was a bit of a let down as the cafe is cash only. It didn’t stop the hordes of locals from coming in. The coffee was flavourful, and the place focused on organic fair trade coffee with a wide variety of organic, vegan, and gluten free options to snack on. Not that we would need any of that.

Cake by the Ocean – DNCE

Who says you can’t have your cake and eat it too? Well, we couldn’t eat the cake because it was too windy, too cold, and lightly raining! Only two blocks from the Slow Coast, we made our way on to Medicine Beach.

image

On the side of Medicine Beach, there was a small staired trail leading up to a lookout. Although the weather was not great, it only got horrible as we left. We managed to capture a couple pictures and Jenina got to eat her “Cake by the Ocean”.

The weather turned so horrible that we ended up heading to the ferry terminal 2 hours early. Almost all the shops in the area closed around 4pm. An island Sunday thing we guess. With mother nature shutting us out, outdoor adventures would have to halt on this last day of adventure.

This concludes Jenina’s birthday getaway. Where will our next adventure take us?
